Sustainability & Energy Transition

Reliable sustainability figures start with meter readings, fuel records, material weights and shipment data. We build that measurement first and let the report follow it.

Our perspective

Sustainability and energy transition work at THEFOCUS covers decarbonisation strategy, reporting readiness, circular business models, climate risk and adaptation, energy efficiency in operations and sustainable products. We start from measured data such as meter readings, fuel cards, invoices, bills of materials, shipments and returns, build the data flows that produce reliable figures, and help management act on them. Assurance and verification stay with independent providers.

Many businesses first meet sustainability as a reporting request: a retailer's supplier questionnaire, a lender's form, a tender that asks for an emissions figure. The answer is assembled from spend-based estimates and sector averages, and the figure cannot move when the business changes anything, because nothing in it was measured. A company that switches to a more efficient carrier or cuts empty running sees no change in its reported footprint, and the next questionnaire is answered from scratch.

We start from the records the business already holds. Electricity and gas meters, fuel card transactions, utility invoices, bills of materials, packaging weights, shipment records and returns data contain most of what an energy and emissions baseline needs. We connect those sources, list the gaps and build a figure that changes when operations change. Reporting is then produced from that dataset, and targets are set once the baseline behind them can be traced to source.

The team that builds the measurement also works on the operational changes: route planning, packaging specifications, equipment schedules, product design, and repair or resale channels. Where an engagement needs a specialist, such as an energy engineer or a life-cycle assessment practitioner, we bring in an independent partner chosen for that problem. Assurance of any published report stays with an independent provider.

Business challenges

  1. 01

    Figures built from averages

Emissions estimated from spend and sector averages do not respond to operational change, so real improvements never show in the reported numbers.

  2. 02

Data spread across portals and invoices

Energy, fuel, waste and freight data sit in supplier portals, PDF invoices and spreadsheets, with gaps nobody has listed.

  3. 03

Requests answered by hand, each one differently

Every buyer, bank and tender asks for slightly different data, and each answer is assembled by whoever receives it, so figures disagree between submissions.

  4. 04

    Targets set before the baseline

A reduction target is announced, the baseline is later restated, and the target loses its meaning with the people who have to deliver it.

  5. 05

Circular schemes with no unit economics

Repair, resale or take-back schemes launch without measuring return volumes, refurbishment cost or resale value, and are closed when nobody can show whether they pay.

  6. 06

Climate exposure missing from investment decisions

Flood, heat and water risks to sites and suppliers are left out of capital plans and site selection, and appear only after an event.

How we approach it

  1. Inventory the sources

We list meters, fuel cards, invoices, bills of materials, shipment and waste records, and note the coverage and gaps of each.

  2. Build the baseline from activity data

Measured quantities come first. Estimates fill gaps only where data is missing, and every estimate is labelled as one.

  3. Change operations and measure the result

Each reduction action is tied to the meter, record or report that will show whether it worked.

  4. Report from the dataset

Disclosures and questionnaire answers come from the same dataset, with methods documented for your assurance provider.

How outcomes are evaluated

  • Share of energy, fuel and freight activity measured directly rather than estimated
  • Energy use per unit of output, by site
  • Material and packaging weight per unit sold
  • Time to answer a customer or lender sustainability request from the dataset
  • Return, repair and resale volumes in circular programmes

Scope boundaries

  • We do not provide assurance, verification or audit opinions on sustainability reports or emissions figures. Those stay with independent assurance providers.
  • We do not trade, broker or sell carbon credits or offsets.
  • We do not validate science-based targets and make no claim of SBTi validation for any client. Validation is carried out only by the Science Based Targets initiative.
  • We do not give legal advice on disclosure obligations. Which rules apply is for the client's legal and compliance advisers.

How an engagement with THEFOCUS starts

A first conversation is about your situation. If there is a fit, we propose a scoped diagnostic with a fixed deliverable before any larger commitment.

Discuss this with us
  1. 01

    A working conversation

Forty-five minutes with the person who would lead the work. We ask about the decision, the systems behind it and the deadline.

  2. 02

    A scoped diagnostic

Read-only access, a fixed timeframe and a written finding: what the records show, what it costs and what to change first.

  3. 03

A plan you can act on

Changes, owners, measures and exclusions in writing. The same team then builds and measures, or hands over cleanly.

One accountable team
The people who diagnose also build the systems and measure the result.
Partners chosen per problem
Independent specialists join for the parts that need them, under one contract.
Records before dashboards
Orders, ledgers and logs are reconciled before any recommendation depends on them.

Questions executives ask

Do you verify or assure our sustainability report?

No. We build the data, controls and method notes behind the report. Assurance and verification are given only by independent providers, and we prepare the documentation they will ask for.

Can you help us answer customer and lender sustainability questionnaires?

Yes. We build a dataset from your operational records and answer each request from it, so figures agree across submissions and each one has a documented method.

Do you sell carbon offsets?

No. We do not trade, broker or sell carbon credits or offsets. Our work focuses on measured reductions in your own operations and supply chain.

Can you set or validate science-based targets?

We build the baseline and model the reduction pathways that inform a target. Validation is done only by the Science Based Targets initiative, and we make no claim of validation on your behalf.

Where do you start if our data is incomplete?

With an inventory of sources and gaps. We use measured data where it exists, label estimates clearly and plan how each gap will be closed, starting with the largest sources of energy use and emissions.

Which sectors do you work in?

We work with businesses in retail and e-commerce, consumer products, food and grocery, hotels, marinas, construction and commodity supply, and we have worked with organisations in the UK, Türkiye, Australia, the US and the Gulf.
