Transportation & Logistics

In transport and logistics, margin is decided job by job: the empty return leg, the waiting time nobody billed, the surcharge left off the invoice. Those details are usually split across a transport management system, telematics, spreadsheets and the accounts package. We connect them so cost and revenue can be read per job, customer and lane.

Market context

Business challenges

  1. 01

Cost per job that nobody can see

Fuel, driver hours, tolls, subcontractor charges and empty legs are recorded in different places. Until they are joined to the job record, pricing rests on averages and loss-making lanes or customers stay hidden.

  2. 02

Charges that never reach the invoice

Waiting time, extra drops and fuel surcharges are agreed by phone or noted in a driver app. If they are not captured against the job, they are not billed, and no report shows the shortfall.

  3. 03

    Status updates chased by phone

Customers ring to ask where a consignment is because the status in the system is late or missing. Each call takes planner time, and proof of delivery often arrives after the invoice run.

  4. 04

Customer KPI packs built by hand

On-time delivery, damage and exception rates are often assembled from exports for each customer, so two customers can receive the same metric calculated two different ways.

Where the opportunity sits

Margin per job, customer and lane

Joining transport management, fuel card and telematics data to invoices gives revenue and cost per job, customer and lane, which is what a pricing review needs.

Chargeable events billed automatically

Recording waiting time, extra drops and proof of delivery against the job, then passing them to invoicing without re-keying, closes the gap between work done and work billed.

One definition for each KPI

Defining on-time delivery, damage and exception rates once, and calculating them from the same data for every customer, makes KPI packs consistent and quick to produce.

How we approach it

We start with a single consignment and trace it through every system it touches, from booking to proof of delivery to invoice and payment. That shows where data is re-entered, where charges drop out and which figures each report depends on. Access stays read-only until the findings are agreed. Fixes then become a prioritised task list: integrations between the TMS, telematics and accounting system, automated invoicing of chargeable events, and a reporting layer with fixed metric definitions. A task closes only when the change has been checked against live records. We do not operate vehicles, warehouses or fulfilment, and planning decisions stay with the client's planners.

How our experience is evidenced

No anonymised engagement in transportation or logistics is published. This page describes our approach and the capabilities we would apply: data integration, reporting, process automation and commercial systems, as we use them in other sectors.

Questions executives ask

Have you worked with transport or logistics companies?

We have not published an anonymised engagement in this sector. Any proposal would state which parts of the work we have done in other sectors and which would be new.

Do you sell or replace transport management systems?

We are not a TMS vendor. We work with the systems you already run and connect them, and we recommend a replacement only where the evidence supports it, with the reasons written down.

Do you provide logistics or warehousing services?

No. We do not move goods, run warehouses or handle fulfilment. We work on the data, processes and systems that the operator and its providers run.

Can you use our telematics and fuel card data?

Where the provider offers an export or an API that your contract allows us to use, yes. Driver location and hours are personal data, so access levels and data-protection terms are agreed before anything is connected.
