Social Sector & Non-profits

Charities report to funders, trustees and the regulator from the same finance and supporter records, and each funder wants the figures in a different shape. We build the data, reporting and workflows that let a charity or foundation answer those requests from one source, sized to the organisation. No anonymised engagement in this sector is published, and this page sets out our approach.

Market context

Business challenges

  1. 01

Every funder wants a different report

Grant reports ask for outputs, outcomes and spend in each funder's own categories and periods. Staff rebuild them from the ledger, a case-management system and spreadsheets, and the figures do not always match the annual accounts.

  2. 02

    Restricted funds tracked by hand

Spending against restricted grants is often allocated in a spreadsheet at year end. Program managers cannot see mid-year how much of a grant remains or whether costs sit against the right fund.

  3. 03

Supporter data split across giving platforms

Donations arrive through online giving platforms, direct debit, events and legacies, each with its own export. Duplicate supporter records, gaps in consent history and incomplete Gift Aid declarations follow.

  4. 04

No return figure for each appeal

Without income joined to campaign and channel, a fundraising team can report totals but cannot say which appeals, events or digital campaigns paid back what they cost.

  5. 05

Operations held by one or two people

Volunteer rotas, referrals and service records run on email and shared documents. When a coordinator leaves, much of the process leaves with them.

Where the opportunity sits

Funder reports from one set of definitions

Mapping each funder's categories once to the charity's own chart of accounts and service data lets staff produce grant reports from the same figures that feed the trustees' annual report.

Fund balances during the year

Coding income and costs to restricted and unrestricted funds as they are recorded gives program managers monthly fund balances and gives trustees early warning of over- or under-spend.

One supporter record

Merging donation, consent and Gift Aid data into the CRM, with a duplicate check at entry, makes Gift Aid claims more complete and lets fundraisers report income against cost by appeal and channel.

How we approach it

We start with the finance ledger, the supporter CRM and whatever system records the services delivered, read-only and within the charity's data-protection policy. We take two or three live funder reports and trace each figure back to its source, which shows where definitions differ and where numbers are rebuilt by hand. The findings become a prioritised plan sized to the organisation, with an owner and a measure for each item. If the charity wants us to build, we set up reporting, data cleaning and workflow automation in the tools it already pays for wherever they can do the job. Our financial work covers management information and reporting design. We do not prepare statutory accounts, carry out independent examinations or audits, or give legal or regulatory advice; those stay with the charity's examiner, auditor and advisers.

How our experience is evidenced

No anonymised engagement with a charity, foundation or other non-profit is published. This page describes our approach and capabilities in funder reporting, fundraising data and operations. THEFOCUS does not prepare statutory accounts or carry out independent examinations or audits. FINMETRA, our financial-data intelligence product, is in design and is not offered today.

Questions executives ask

Have you worked with charities before?

We have not published an anonymised engagement in the social sector. A proposal would state which methods we have applied in other sectors and which would be new for your organisation.

Can you prepare our annual accounts or act as independent examiner?

No. We do not prepare statutory accounts, carry out independent examinations or audits, or advise on charity law. We build the management reporting and data that your finance team, examiner or auditor works from.

Will we need to buy new software?

Not by default. We first check whether your accounting package, CRM and spreadsheets can do the job once the data is structured consistently. Where a new tool is justified, the recommendation states its running cost and the problem it removes.

Is FINMETRA available?

No. FINMETRA is in design. It is intended to turn accounting and management data into decision-ready reporting, and it has no customers and is not offered as a product today.
