Business Model Innovation
A new business model is a set of assumptions about who pays, how often and at what cost to serve. We test those assumptions in a live trial before the business rebuilds around them.
Questions we help answer
- Could part of our revenue move to subscription, service or rental without cannibalising margin?
- Would a trade or B2B channel earn more than another retail channel?
- Which of our assets, such as data, stock or locations, could earn more than they do today?
- What is the smallest trial that would tell us whether customers will pay?
- Are we measuring a high-consideration business as if it were an online shop?
What we do
Model assessment
How the business earns today, the cost to serve each customer type and the assumptions in the current model that may no longer hold.
Model options
Alternative ways to earn from existing customers and assets, each written as testable assumptions about price, frequency, cost to serve and cannibalisation.
Live trials
Small, time-boxed trials built on the client's real channels, with the success threshold agreed before launch.
Scale-up build
Billing, commerce, CRM and reporting changes needed to run the new model at scale, built by the same team once a trial passes.

How we approach it
- 01
Write the model as assumptions
Each option becomes a short list of assumptions that can be shown true or false, which keeps the debate on evidence.
- 02
Trial before building
We build the lightest version that real customers can buy, measure it against the agreed threshold and stop if it fails.
- 03
Build what passed
Only models that pass their trial get the full systems work, which keeps investment in proportion to evidence.

Verified buyer sourcing and sales-channel comparison for a small agricultural grower
A small grower holding a few tonnes of a new-season crop asked for verified firms that buy direct from producers. We built the list from official membership registries and showed that the choice of sales channel mattered more than the choice of buyer.

Launch program for a new fine jewellery brand, from positioning to storefront and production equipment
A young jewellery brand preparing to sell direct to consumers engaged us for a multi-phase launch program. So far that has produced the brand position, a built storefront, the sales and social accounts, a product render standard and a purchase recommendation for in-house casting equipment.

How an engagement with THEFOCUS starts
A first conversation is about your situation. If there is a fit, we propose a scoped diagnostic with a fixed deliverable before any larger commitment.

A working conversation
Forty-five minutes with the person who would lead the work. We ask about the decision, the systems behind it and the deadline.
02
A scoped diagnostic
Read-only access, a fixed timeframe and a written finding: what the records show, what it costs and what to change first.
03
A plan you can act on
Changes, owners, measures and exclusions in writing. The same team then builds and measures, or hands over cleanly.
- One accountable team
- The people who diagnose also build the systems and measure the result.
- Partners chosen per problem
- Independent specializts join for the parts that need them, under one contract.
- Records before dashboards
- Orders, ledgers and logs are reconciled before any recommendation depends on them.
Questions executives ask
Why trials instead of a full business case?
A business case for a new model rests on assumptions about customer behavior that the business has no data on yet. A small live trial produces that data and costs far less than building the wrong model.
Does THEFOCUS have its own experience of building new models?
Yes. The firm builds and runs its own products, including a live local-business service brand and products at pilot and design stage, so the trial-before-build method is one we apply to ourselves.
